you need to have the denominator match. the earliest number that 2 and 5 match is 10. So multiply the fraction by how much the denominator is multiplied to get to 10.

1/2 * 5 = 5/10 and 3/5 * 2 = 6/10. then add 5/10 and 6/10 to get 1 1/10. then add the 4 and 1 from the original equation (4 2/2 and 1 3/5) with the 1 from 1 1/10 to get 6. in all, you should get 6 from all the whole numbers and 1/10 from the final answer to get the total, 6 1/10
