The sun
The energy that causes the uneven heating of the Earth comes primarily from the sun. The sun's energy is in electromagnetic radiation. The atmosphere and surface absorb and reflect energy, leading to variations in temperature and climate across the planet.
The atmosphere traps the sun's energy and prevents it from escaping back into space. Gases absorb and re-radiate this energy through heat, which warms the planet.
