Solve the following system of equations using elimination and show your work.

5x+y=24
-5x-4y=-56

Given:-

  • 5x + y = 24 .... eqⁿ 1
  • -5x -4y = -56 .... eqⁿ 2

now, add the eqⁿ 1 to eqⁿ ∼

5x + y = 24

-5x - 4y = -56

————————

5y = 80

y = 80/5

y = 16

now , put the value of y = 16 in eqⁿ 2 ∼

  • 5x + y = 24
  • 5x + 16 = 24
  • 5x = 24 - 16
  • 5x = 8
  • x = 8/5

or

  • x = 1.6
