i believe Nellie is explaining that she understands that reporters are the ones that can really uncover a mystery (ferreting out - to solve or uncover something). She is saying she would rather face many professionals, who would be quite anxiety inducing, than a reporter. She also shows she knows she’s good at what she does. from this, it seems as if she’s also a reporter.
