Phoebe is responsible for buying a

week's supply of food and medication for
the dogs and cats at a local shelter. The
food and medication for each dog costs
twice as much as those supplies for a cat.
He needs to feed 54 cats and 33 dogs. Her budget is $2400. How much can Phoebe
spend on each cat for food and
medication?

Answer: $20

D (dog costs): 2C
C: cat costs

Set up an equation:54C+33(2c)=2400. It’s not 54C+33D, because with two variables you can’t really find the value of one. So I substituted 2C for D, because dog costs are twice the cost of cat costs. You get C=20.
