5. How did the Cape of Good Hope get its name?

Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese navigator, gave the Cape its first name as the Cape of Storms in the 1480s. Later, in an effort to draw more travelers to the southern African coast-passing Cape Sea Route, it was renamed Good Hope.
