a diagonal in a square is equal to the hypotenuse of the right triangle that is created by drawing the diagonal.
If it is a right triangle, we can use the Pythagorean theorem.
a^2 + b^2 =c^2
If a = b (sides of a square are equal) then we can do
2( a^2) =22^2
2 (a^2) = 484
Divide by 2
a^2 = 242
Because Area of a square = length^2, and in this case a = the length, the area is 242.
