First you are to do what is in the parenthesis first:

9 - 6 = 3

The equation is now:

6 * 3 - 23 + 4

Then you do the multiplcation:

6 * 3 = 18

18 - 23 + 4

23 + 4 = 27

27 - 18 = 9
