Thus we have equal ratios:

  • 7x/9x = (8x - 1)/(10x + 1)

Solve it for x:

  • 7x/9x = (8x - 1)/(10x + 1) Cancel x on the left side as x ≠ 0
  • 7/9 = (8x - 1)/(10x + 1) Cross- multiply
  • 7(10x + 1) = 9(8x - 1) Distribute
  • 70x + 7 = 72x - 9 Collect like terms
  • 72x - 70x = 7 + 9 Simplify
  • 2x = 16 Divide by 2
  • x = 8 Answer
