Answer:

x = 2 , y = - 1

Explanation:

2x + 6y = - 2 → (1)

- 6x - 8y = - 4 → (2)

multiplying (1) by 3 and adding to (2) will eliminate x

6x + 18y = - 6 → (3)

add (2) and (3) term by term to eliminate x

(- 6x + 6x) + (- 8y + 18y) = - 4 - 6

0 + 10y = - 10

10y = - 10 ( divide both sides by 10 )

y = - 1

substitute y = - 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

substituting into (1)

2x + 6(- 1) = - 2

2x - 6 = - 2 ( add 6 to both sides )

2x = 4 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 2
