Can someone please give a step-by-step on how to solve this? Thanks!

(1 + √2)^2
=(1+1)^2
=2^2
=4

Step by Step Explanation
You would apply the squared sign to both number 1 and square root of two. So you do 1*1 which is just one. But since square is the opposite if square root it would be 2 when you apply the squared. If you don’t understand say you had the the square root of 9 and it was squared. Well the square root of 9 is 3 and then what’s 3 squared. 9. So that’s why it’s just 2. Then you just add 1+2. So the answer is 3.
