A group of students were asked which club they planned to join.

Club Percent of Students

Garden Club 0.1

Robotics Club 0.2

Technology Club 0.5

Zoology Club 0.2

Compare the probabilities of a randomly selected student joining a club and interpret the likelihood. Choose the statement that is true.

The student will be more likely to join the Robotics Club than the Garden Club because P(Robotics) > P(Garden).

The student will be equally likely to join the Robotics Club or Technology Club because P(Robotics) = P(Technology).

The student will be more unlikely to join the Zoology Club than the Robotics Club because P(Zoology) > P(Robotics).

The student will be more likely to join the Garden Club than the Robotics Club because P(Garden) < P(Robotics).

Answer: A - Robotics > Garden

Explanation:

Hello! What you need to do is look at the decimals. You can write down which clubs have smaller decimals, equal decimals, and greater decimals than other clubs. You know that there is an equal probability for the Robotics Club and Zoology Club because 0.2 = 0.2

Robotics Club = Zoology Club

You also know that the Garden Club has the smallest percentage so:

Garden Club < Robotics Club = Zoology Club

And you also know that the technology club has the greatest percentage out of all of them so:

Garden Club < Robotics Club = Zoology Club < Technology Club

_<_ blank is less than blank, _>_ blank is more than blank, _=_ blank is equal to blank. A way I was able to remember this is that a smaller crocodile eats a bigger crocodile.

Now use the information you know:

Garden Club < Robotics Club = Zoology Club < Technology Club to figure out the answer.

Look at the last answer. You know the student is not more likely to join the Garden Club (0.1 or 10%) than the Robotics Club (0.2 or 20%) because the percentage of a student joining the garden club is smaller than the percentage of joining the Robotics Club. The formula shown for that answer is correct with Garden < Robotics, but what the rest of the answer says is incorrect.

Look at the third answer. You know that the student is not unlikely to join the Zoology Club (0.2 or 20%) than the Robotics Club (0.2 or 20%) because the probability of both is equal as shown in the formula previously made, Robotics Club = Zoology Club.

Look at the second answer. The percentage of a student joining the robotics club (0.2 or 20%) is smaller than the percentage of a student joining the technology club (0.5 or 50%), so they are not equally likely. The chance of a student joining the technology club is greater than the chance of a student joining the robotics club. This answer is also not correct.

Look at the first answer. The student is more likely to join the robotics club than the garden club because 0.2 (20%) is greater than 0.1 (10%). The formula is also correct because Robotics > Garden, or Robotics is greater than the probability of a student joining the garden club. The first answer is correct.
