Lena is sharing 36 muffins equally with some friends. She uses division to determine how many people can have a share if each person gets a particular number of muffins. For example, 36÷9=4

means that if each person gets 9 muffins, 4 people can have muffins. Here are some other calculations:

36÷9=4
36÷3=12
36÷1=36
36÷13=?

1. Elena thinks the “?
” represents a number greater than 36. Do you agree?

Answer: Disagree.

Explanation:

Dividend = 36

Divisor = 13

36 (Dividend) ÷ 13 (Divisor) = 2 (Quotient)

Remainder = 10

Rules of division indicate,

Quotient < Dividend

Here too, 2 < 36

Thus, the answer to 36÷13 does NOT represent a number greater than 36.
