Answer:

Lauren has 44 watermelons

Explanation:

Let us use W to denote the number of watermelons and O to denote the number of oranges

We have

W:O = 88:14

This can be represented as a fraction:

(W)/(O) = (88)/(14)

Divide numerator and denominator of
(88)/(14) by 2

(88 / 2)/(14 / 2) = (44)/(7)\\\\\\\\\mathrm{So\; (W)/(O) = (44)/(7)}\\\\

This means for every 7 oranges there are 44 times that number of watermelons

Since we are given that there are 7 oranges she should have 44 watermelons

Another way of looking at this is from the relation

(W)/(O) = (44)/(7)}\\\\

Putting in O = 7 we get

(W)/(7) = (44)/(7)\\\\

Since the denominators are the same the numerators must be the same i.e. W = 44

Lauren has 44 watermelons
