16 + 1 = 17

17 = 17 ✓

(16 + 1) -1 = 17 - 2

(17) -1 = 15

16 ≠ 15 ✗

The second equation is incorrect. We can tell right away because 2 is being subtracted from 2, but nothing is being taken away from the 16 (1 - 1 = 0).
