x + 3y = - 23 → (1)

- x + 4y = - 26 → (2)

add (1) and (2) term by term to eliminate x

(x - x) + (3y + 4y) = - 23 - 26

0 + 7y = - 49

7y = - 49 ( divide both sides by 7 )

y = - 7

substitute y = - 7 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

substituting into (1)

x + 3(- 7) = - 23

x - 21 = - 23 ( add 21 to both sides )

x = - 2

solution is (- 2, - 7 )
