Explain why the following scenario might result in a cattle herd with improved resistance to cold.

A farmer noticed that many of his cows were suffering through the winter. He begins a breeding program choosing parents with longer or thicker fur and a thicker fat layer on the torso. After a number of generations, he notices that the cattle seem better adapted to the cold.
