Personally I would choose #2, but they're both good. So you could do something like

Social media outlets such as T w i t t e r are similar to a newspaper back in time. It has images/current events/news/etc.

Or you could do #1!

A lot of Columbus books published back in the day would not be the same now, being that modern day revisionism has altered the ideas and tried to put censorship on a lot of events in modern history.
