At a certain school, the PTA and the planning board meet at the same time, so it is impossible for a parent to do both. If the probability that a parents is on the PTA is 0.17, and the probability that a parent is on the planning board is 0.27, what is the probability that a parent participates in the PTA or the planning board?

Answer: 0.44

Explanation:

If the probability that someone does action A is a, and the probability that someone does action B is b, the probability that someone does action A or B is a+b.

So in this case, the probability that a parent participates in the PTA or the planning board = 0.17+0.27 = 0.44
