Pythagorean Theorem
We have that in a right triangle, each side receive a name:
The Pythagorean Theorem says:
side 1² + side 2² = hypotenuse²
Finding side 2
In this case we have that
side 1 = 7
hypotenuse = √85
and we want to find side 2.
Using the formula of the pythagorean theorem:
side 1² + side 2² = hypotenuse²
↓ since side 1 = 7 and hypotenuse = √85
7² + side 2² = √85²
↓ since 7² = 49 and √85² = 85
49 + side 2² = 85
Now, we have an equation for side 2:
49 + side 2² = 85
↓ taking 49 to the right side
side 2² = 85 - 49 = 36
side 2² = 36
Since 6² = 36
Then side 2² = 6²
Then side 2 = 6
Answer: 6
