Answer:

Rate of the jet in still air: 635 mi/h

Rate of the jet stream: 60 mi/h

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the speed of the jet in still air be x

Let the speed of the jet stream be y

Speed = Distance/time

The speed of the jet traveling against the jet stream = 2875/5

The speed of the jet traveling against the jet stream = 575 miles per hour

x - y = 575...................(1)

The speed of the jet traveling with the jet stream = 3475/5

The speed of the jet traveling with the jet stream = 695 miles per hour

x + y = 695..................(2)

Add equations (1) and (2)

2x = 1270

x = 1270/2

x = 635 mi/h

Rate of the jet in still air: 635 mi/h

Subtract equation (1) from equation (2)

2y = 120

y = 120/2

y = 60 mi/h

Rate of the jet stream: 60 mi/h
