(√(x+5) )/(4) =y

Multiply both sides of the equation by 4.


√(x+5)=4y

Eliminate the square root on the left side raising both sides of the equation to the power of 2.


√(x+5)^2=(4y)^2

The square root and the exponent on the left side cancel out leaving us with


x+5=(4y)^2

Distribute the exponent on the right side.


x+5=4^2y^2

Simplify.


x+5=16y^2

Subtract 5 from both sides.


x=16y^2-5
