Facilitated diffusion is the process by which molecules or ions move across a cell membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, with the help of specific transport proteins. It does not require energy from the cell and is passive. It is also called facilitated transport.

On the other hand, active transport is the process by which molecules or ions move across a cell membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration, against the concentration gradient. It requires energy from the cell in the form of ATP and is active.
