So this treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory in exchange for $15 million and the assumption of Mexican debts to American citizens. But what was not discussed was the issue of slavery.

The treaty almost doubled the size of the United States and began a debate, between Northerners and Southerners, over what to do with the newly acquired land. weather for it to be slave land or free land per say.
