Eventually both countries sought to have the upper hand by having the most hydrogen bombs, so they kept creating more and more and more. These nuclear weapons are what caused the lack of conflict in the Cold War. Both countries knew that nuclear weapons brought mutually assured destruction. In other words, if one country attacked with a nuclear weapon, than both countries would be decimated by the ensuing warfare. However, neither country would back down because they believed so strongly in their respective ideas of democracy and communism.
So, the Cold War could not have been prevented because the U.S. would not accept communism and the USSR would not give up communism. The only way it could have been prevented was if the Soviet Union did not try to spread communism, but they saw it as necessary to protect their country. Thus, the Cold War was inevitable since the two most powerful countries in the world had such different ideals.
