Read the passage from part 1 of "For the Win.”

"I just have to beat him,” Jake muttered as he waited for his Iditarod start. Dogs yipped and howled, and mushers shouted all around him, but he didn’t hear any of it. Jake’s mind was set on only one thing—beating Dean Walker.

He and Dean had been facing one another in every sport since middle school. From track and field to archery, Dean was always the winner, but that wasn’t what bothered Jake. What bugged him was that Dean called him a loser every time they met.

Answer: d external conflict

Step-by-step explanation:

Definition of External Conflict. External conflict is a struggle that takes place between the main character and some outside force. Therefore, it is outside the body of the protagonist. Usually, it occurs when the protagonist struggles against the antagonist, a character that opposes the protagonist in the main body of the story.
