Metternich was the Austrian foreign minister who played a major role in the Congress of Vienna in 1815 following the end of the Napoleonic Wars. He proposed a diplomatic solution to the chaos caused by Napoleon that would be known as the “Concert of Europe.” This plan called for the major European powers to work together to maintain a balance of power in Europe and prevent any single nation from becoming too powerful. This system also allowed Metternich to limit the influence of powerful revolutionary movements such as nationalism and liberalism. In addition, Metternich worked to reestablish the old political order of Europe, restore the monarchies that had been overthrown by Napoleon, and create a strong coalition of European powers to prevent any future wars.
