The Underground Railroad (UGRR) was an informal network of individuals who helped enslaved persons and free African American men and women escape slavery. For these individuals to gain freedom, they often had to rely on the assistance of abolitionists, lawyers, and other individuals who provided legal services. The UGRR and the assistance of legal professionals was essential to help individuals win their freedom in the courts. By being tried under "Delaware laws," individuals could use the state's gradual emancipation laws to gain their freedom, as well as access the legal services of the UGRR. By being tried under Delaware laws, individuals could also challenge the legality of their enslavement, as slavery was not recognized within the state.
