to determine if (- 5, 4 ) is a solution to the system, substitute the x- coordinate x = - 5 into the right side of both equations and if the value obtained is equal to the y- coordinate y = 4 then it is a solution.

Note that this must be true for both equations

y = 3(- 5) + 19 = - 15 + 19 = 4 ← True

y = - 2(- 5) - 7 = 10 - 7 = 3 ≠ 4 ← False

thus (- 5, 4 ) is not a solution to the system of equations.
