casualty definition: a person killed or injured in a war accident
casualties are usually deaths caused by things like murder, getting shot or taken in as a prisoner of war. casualties are a broader area than deaths.
casualties don’t necessarily mean death but very close to it or unknown.

the factors accounting for the high numbers of casualties in ww1 are how militaries were using new technologies, therefore trial and error was inevitable
