Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi came to power in Iran in 1941, after the forced abdication of his father, Shah Reza Pahlavi.
He was installed by the British and Soviet forces, during their joint occupation of Iran in World War II.
The young shah was only 22 years old when he first assumed the throne.
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ruled as an authoritarian leader for 38 years until he was overthrown in the Iranian Revolution of 1979.
His reign was marked by a series of modernization policies that brought changes to the social, economic and political aspects of the country, but also with a suppression of political dissent, censorship, and human rights violations.
