5x + 4y = 23 -----(2)

Multiplying eq. (1) by 5:

5x - 15y = -15 ------(3)

5x + 4y = 23

Subtracting (1) from (3):

-19y = - 38

y = 2

therefore, x - 6 = -3

x = 3
