Solving for x and y intercepts when given an equation:

  • the x-intercept occurs when y = 0, so we can set y = 0 and solve for x
  • the y-intercept occurs when x = 0, so set x=0 and solve for y
  • perform inverse operations until x or y is isolated

X-intercept:

2x-5(0)=20

2x=20

x=10

x-intercept occurs at (10,0)

Y-intercept

2(0)-5y=20

-5y=20

y=-4

y-intercept occurs at (0,-4)
