The coefficient is distributed to each of the elements, while the subscript is only that element. A coefficient of 3 multiplied to C and O. There are 3 carbon atoms. For oxygen, it also has a subscript, meaning you multiply the coefficient by the subscript to get 9 oxygen atoms
