Let the initial depth be x

If there is an increase, the difference

= 52 - x meters

In percentage

(52 - x)/x = 0.23

52 - x = 0.23x

52 = 1.23x

1.23x = 52

Divide both sides by 1.23

x = 52/1.23

x = 42.28 meters
