The four river valley civilizations of Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, the Indus Valley, and ancient China all developed advanced societies, in part due to their use of irrigation systems to manage water resources. These systems allowed the civilizations to sustain a large population and support their cultural and economic development. In particular, ancient Egypt and ancient China were able to take advantage of the annual flood cycle of the Nile and Yellow Rivers, respectively, to irrigate their crops and support the growth of their civilizations.
