INDEX FOSSILS
Index fossils are fossils that are used to help determine the relative age of rock layers and sedimentary strata. However, it is possible that artifacts or other remains associated with human activity could be used as index fossils in the future. For example, the presence of certain types of tools or other materials might be used to help determine the relative age of a site or to understand the environmental conditions and human activity in a particular region at a specific point in time.
