During Reconstruction, President Abraham Lincoln's goal was to rebuild the Union and reunite the North and South following the Civil War. This involved a number of initiatives, including the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery, and the implementation of various Reconstruction Acts, which aimed to provide civil and political rights to newly freed African Americans.
Lincoln's main goal during Reconstruction was to create a more unified and equitable nation in which all people were treated equally and had the opportunity to participate in the political process. He believed that Reconstruction was an important step towards fulfilling the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and creating a more perfect Union.
Unfortunately, Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865, and the task of Reconstruction fell to his successor, President Andrew Johnson. Johnson's approach to Reconstruction differed from Lincoln's in a number of ways, and the Reconstruction period ultimately resulted in a mixed legacy, with significant progress made in some areas but ongoing challenges and inequalities in others.
