stigmatized would be a word that would make relevant sense when put in that blank. But since I don’t see any answer choices to choose from, my answer is merely subjective and based on my own rote knowledge. Stigmatized makes sense because mental illness carried significantly greater taboo connotation 50 years ago due to less education and understanding of the general public. Institutionalized would make sense too, as that was also more likely to happen 50 years ago. Thankfully we’ve developed vast support options for mental illnesses since then so institutionalization has become seldom in retrospect to the distant past.
