Sources of law :

1. U.S. Constitution, 2. Federal statutes (legislative), 3. Executive orders (executive/president), 4. Treaties, 5. The 50 state constitutions, 6. State statues (legislative), 7. State executive orders, 8. Local ordinances (legislative), 9. Rules and rulings (decisions) of federal, state, and local agencies (administrative), 10. Decisions of federal and state courts (judicial/common law), 11. Private laws (contracts) and business customs and practices.

Statutes and Acts: Laws are also known as Acts of Congress. The statute is another word that is used interchangeably with law. When the president signs a law, the law receives a number in the order in which it is signed.

Ordinance:

The legislative act of a local municipality (i.e. a city, parish, or county ordinance).
