Explanation:

In order to add fractions, we must first find a common denominator, which in this case would be 16 because 8 times 2 = 16.

Whatever we do to the denominator must be done to the numerator, so we have to also multiply 7 by 2 to give us the fraction 14/16.

Now we can add the fractions: 5/16 + 14/16 = 19/16 or 1 3/16
