Answer: the attraction between the protons and neutrons pulls the nucleus apart

Explanation: but also it is because of the fact that protons repel each other, and even though the neutrons hold the protons together in the nucleus, it has been theorized that eventually you will reach "critical mass" where you cannot make a nucleus any bigger, no matter how many neutrons you add.
