Answer:

a) Molly had $212.50 in her account to begin with.

b) She has $127.50 in her account after buying the bicycle.

Explanation:

40% of what number is 85.

.4x = 85 Divide both sides by .4

x = 212.50

212.50 - 85 = 127.50

Another way to look at it is if she spent 40%, she still have 60% left in her account.

.6 x 212.50 = 127.50
