Some pencils were shared equally among a class of 44 students, leaving no remainders. 8 students had all their pencils necessary so they gave theirs to the rest of their classmates. As a result, their classmates received 2 more pencils each. How many pencils were there in all?

Answer:

52x

Explanation:

Let's call the number of pencils that each student received after the 8 students gave their pencils away x.

The total number of pencils that the 8 students had is 8x.

The total number of pencils in the class is 44x.

The total number of pencils that the 8 students gave away is 82 = 16.

So, the total number of pencils that were shared equally among the 44 students is 44x - 16.

The total number of pencils in all is 44x + 8x = 52x.

So there were 52x pencils in all.
