The expressions are alike that each expression show that that we are going a distance of 5 units from 3.

The difference is that the first expression is going a distance of 5 units left from 3 on the number line and the answer is -2. The second expression is also a distance of 5 units from 3, but it is the distance of right 5 units from 3 which is 8.
