Lakia wants to make an enclosed paper basket shaped like a cone for May Day. The slant height of the cone measures 8 inches and the circular opening measures 5 inches across. How much paper does she need for the basket?Round to the nearest tenth at the end.

Since the paper basked has a shape of a cone we need to use the correct formula for the surface area of a cone. This is shown below:


A_(surface)=\pi r(s+r)

Where r is the measurement of the radius and s is the measurement of the slant height. Applying the provided data from the problem we have:


\begin{gathered} A_{\text{surface}}=\pi\cdot(5)/(2)\cdot(8+(5)/(2)) \\ A_{\text{surface}}=\pi\cdot(5)/(2)\cdot((21)/(2))=(105)/(4)\pi=82.47_{} \end{gathered}

The surface area of the basket is 105/4 pi square inches or 82.47 square inches.
