Answer: They bought 8 adult tickets and 4 child tickets.

Explanation:

x = amount of adult tickets bought

y= amount of child tickets bought

1. Set up a system

8.5x+5.5y = 90

x+y = 12

2. Solve for a variable (I'll do x for example)

y=12-x

3. Substitute y into the first equation

8.5x+5.5(12-x)=90

8.5x+66-5.5x=90

3x=24

x=8

4. Substitute x back into the second equation

8+y=12

y=4
