by organisms", which one would you choose to defend and why?

I would defend the statement "adaptations are earned by organisms".

This because a characteristic of an organism is its ability to adapt to the environment they inhabit. Therefore, the organism has to adapt to the environment on their own, meaning, in order for them to adapt, it must be under their own timings or circumstances. That is to say, the adaptation of an organism to an environment is not given to them, it earned/ obtained by them under their own measures.
