A farmer is building a rectangular pen to fence in his pigs, using 100 feet of fencing. He

is planning to use his barn as one side of the pen. If the farmer wants to maximum the
area inside the pen, what should be the length of the longer side of the pen?

Answer:

33.3 ft

Explanation:

A square (which is a rectangle) will maximize the area enclosed ....if one side is the barn, then the other three sides = 100 ft

100 / 3 = 33.3 ft per side (There is no 'longer' side....they are all 33.3 ft)
