The correct answer to this open question is the following.

Citizens tried to change government policy during the depression's early years by organizing and participating in demonstrations to protest for the terrible economic situation after the US stock market crash. They tried to show the government their disenchantment for the lack of support.

After the Black Thursday on October 24, 1929, the US stock market finally crashed on October 29, 1929. This represented the beginning of the Great Depression, a moment in US history when thousands of people lost their jobs, banks went into bankruptcy, and companies closed. People lived in fear, there were not enough jobs, and American citizens had to find their own way to survive.

During the early years of the depression the government and the president didn't react to the economic issues. They believe that the economy would just handle it on its own and that the depression wasn't as big of an issue as it was. Since the people saw that the government wasn't going to help them, they started organizing themselves to protest this. This is why FDR managed to get a huge support since he understood the needs of the people.
